What is Acomplia?

Acomplia is a prescription weight loss medication developed by Sanofi-Aventis, a French pharmaceutical firm.

How does Acomplia work?

Acomplia works by blocking the CB1 receptor in the Endocannabinoid System (EC). The CB1 receptor is instrumental to the intake and regulation of food. When a patient begins taking Acomplia, their desire to eat excessively is suppressed. Acomplia prevents the brain from experiencing the satisfaction of a pleasurable activity (eating or smoking). It does this simply by preventing the EC substance from attaching to and stimulating the brain cells, thus increasing a patients feeling of fullness after having eaten a meal.

Clinical Tests of Acomplia

Recent clinical trials indicate that one third of patients who were given a daily 20mg dose of Acomplia were able to achieve a 10% reduction in their body weight over a two year period. Approximately 62% of patients given Acomplia achieved a 5% reduction in their body weight. Measured waist circumference after two years of taking 20 mg of Acomplia was reduced by 3.1 inches or 8cm. In those patients taking 5mg of Acomplia daily, waist circumference was reduced by 1.9 inches or 4.9cm. In all clinical trials, a 20mg Acomplia dosage proved more effective than lower doses.
