Even at rest, muscles burn energy

December 20th, 2008

Life is so unfair. If only we could do whatever we wanted without any penalty! Sadly, I can’t hit people just because they annoy me and I can’t get all the things I want without paying for them. And then there’s my weight. It’s so unfair I can’t lose weight just by thinking it would be good to be slim again. Why must we always pay for what we want or do? Well, OK, life is unfair. You can’t spend money on eating lots of fatty food and avoid putting on extra pounds. It’s like playing a game. If you hit a ball with a tennis racquet or a baseball bat, it flies away from you. The best way to eat fewer calories is to eat smaller portions of healthier food. To speed up the process, you can use acomplia. Research has consistently shown that people using this drug in combination with a better diet lose up to 10% of their body weight. But there is another factor. Physical exercise. First off, even though your body weight may not change immediately, replacing pounds of fat with lean muscle is good for you by improving blood circulation. Secondly, the more muscle you carry, the more energy your body burns at rest. Your metabolic rate automatically increases when introduce exercise into your overall regime to lose weight. So even when you are asleep or lying on that couch, you are burning more energy than before you began to exercise. Combine this with a healthier diet and acomplia, and your weight loss increases. So how much exercise are we talking about? Giving up about half-an-hour, three days a week will be sufficient to raise your metabolic rate so long as you keep it up. But just one or two weeks is not enough. Making friends and working out with them will keep you going longer. Then it’s just down to you to keep eating smaller portions of healthier food and, if you want the fastest result, using acomplia as well.

Nothing but good to say about it

November 18th, 2008

Tramadol hcl has been used as a painkiller for almost thirty years in both the hospital and the home environment. During this time, research has varied in intensity. There was then a lull until the 1990s when it was discovered that tramadol not only interacts with the opioid receptors, but also acts to inhibit the reuptake of serotonin and noradrenaline. In a hospital, tramadol is a part of the general panel of drugs and therapies used to relieve pain, particularly following surgery where pain may be acute.

However, its use as a part of the anesthetic is now reduced because it seems to allow some level of consciousness during the operation. Patients are able to recall some events during surgery. There is also some evidence of breathing difficulties after surgery where large amounts of tramadol have been used. Although some patients experience nausea and, occasionally, vomiting, there are rarely any adverse effects when tramadol is used after surgery.

This makes it the preferred choice as against the other narcotic painkillers because the risks of addiction are minimal. In different hospital contexts, tramadol is used for pain relief during labor without adverse reaction from either the mother or the child as it is born. It has also established an excellent track record for relieving pain following a heart attack. As the tumors become more aggressive, tramadol is recommended by the World Health Organization as the safest and most effective drug to use until the more advanced stages when morphine has to be used.

In the home context, tramadol hcl in tablet form remains the staple drug for the relief of both acute and chronic pain. Its key advantage over the more powerful opioid analgesics is that it is less likely to produce physical or psychological dependence. Because it affects the serotonin and noradrenaline systems, it is also useful to reduce the risk of anxiety and depression without having to immediately resort to antidepressants. So, no matter how you look at it, tramadol hcl is a great all-round performer.

McCain avoids Viagra question

September 27th, 2008

Back in last summer, former senator was asked about his voting record on medical insurance. With abortion such a hot button issue in the Presidential Election campaign, someone asked him a direct question - makes a refreshing change to find someone asking a politician for a quick answer on Viagra trading. It went along the lines, “Did you vote in the Senate against a proposal to require insurance companies to protect contraceptive products?” To give you some information, most private medical insurance companies will not cover the cost of any contraceptive product but will pay for their male policy holders to get their Viagra. When women are good enough to be appointed as the policy makers, they can pay out for the women to get their contraceptives, don’t you think so? Beating around the bush.

Anyway, let’s not get into that. When asked the question, McCain gave one of those straight answers he is so famous for, “I don’t know enough about it to give you an informed answer because I don’t recall the vote.” Did you see that one of the side effects of Viagra is amnesia? Looks like McCain has been using Viagra just a little too long if he can’t remember how he votes on important political issues. And just so you don’t get confused, I’m against gender discrimination in any and every form.

Control the pain - improve the mood

September 26th, 2008

When it comes hot and fast, you want it to go away. Once you’ve experienced real pain, you fear its return. If it seems like it’s always there and always going to be there, it affects your mood. However you want to think about pain, there are several truths you can never escape. The cause is irrelevant. It can be a problem in the joints or it can be non-specific. There can be a confirmed diagnosis or your doctor is guessing until more test results come in. This is not a judgement on you as a person. Some people may be weak, others strong. It’s at this time that some doctors suggest you take an antidepressant. So, you’ve been taking a steady dose of Ultram to keep the pain within manageable limits. Now is the time to add one of the tricyclics. Painkillers like Ultram can only treat the physical symptoms you feel as pain. Painkillers are not a cure. From the other side, antidepressants are only intended to help you understand that you can regain mobility and control over your situation. They also can act like sedatives which helps you to sleep. When you are better rested, you have a more balanced view of your condition.

Xanax is the most popular benzodiazepine in the US

September 25th, 2008

Every year, Xanax has been winning the prize in the “most prescribed” category. Naturally, Pfizer, the manufacturer, loves these annual headlines. They help customers believe this drug is so popular because it really works. Well, that’s true to some extent. Take it for too long or at too high a dose and you’re likely to get hooked. So before you go down this path, think carefully.

The way the world works today, people do need help. Drugs like xanax really do help them to cope with the stress. But it’s not helpful to see drugs as the only solution. Yes, xanax relieves anxiety, but you don’t want to become an addict. You need to change yourself. Use that opportunity to get counseling and therapy. In the medium to long term, psychological support is the way to learn how to control your fear and worry. Live life the natural way, don’t pay endlessly for “help” through a bottle of tablets.

The US Government now accepts that prescription medications are routinely abused. You only have to go into the emergency departments of hospitals to see the truth of this. In 2005, there were more than 2 million admissions caused by the non-medical use of drugs. One of the reasons for this is the easy availability of drugs that can give you a “high” both over-the-counter and through the internet. This drug gives you a breathing space. Add in the continuous barrage of advertisements for drugs, and people are persuaded to take FDA-approved medications without worrying about the consequences.

You need hope

September 24th, 2008

No matter how effective a drug like Ultram in two words, you cannot afford to become too dependent on Big Pharma. That means the temptation to increase the dose or move on to ever stronger medications. Combined, this is the slippery slope to economic and physical ruin.

To deal with this, you have to go back to the source of the problem - the pain itself. You cannot allow the pain to dominate your life. You have to take back control. The first step is like a New year Resolution. It’s a commitment that you’re going to restore your quality of life. So the next time you see your doctor, you will ask for a repeat prescription for the Ultram, but you will also ask for real help in coming to terms with the sickness or disorder causing your pain.

Yes, it may cost you money to see a therapist but balance that cost against the drug bill you will have for the rest of your life unless you take action now. If your own doctor is unsympathetic, ask your friends and colleagues to recommend someone who will take the time to give you the skills to manage the pain.

Wine, women and smoke

September 18th, 2008

When we are young and your lifestyle is very healthy, it never occurs to us that anything can go wrong with this wonderful machine we all live in. The human body gets wrapped up in a myth of invincibility so we do many things we should not do at all, and do many things that are intrinsically not so dangerous to a dangerous excess. That is what being young is all about. We all have to learn where our limits are. Taking cialis to maintain stamina over a long weekend of activity is safe. Other substances may be less helpful. Of course, this includes sex and most will experiment both with conventional sex and sex in conjunction with recreational drugs.

Then, as we grow older, the body can start presenting us with the bills for our past excesses. Clinical studies have now established that about a quarter of all cases of erectile dysfunction (ED) are caused by smoking and/or substance abuse. Put another way, male smokers who have high blood pressure are 26 times more likely to suffer ED. Former smokers with high blood pressure are 11 times more likely to suffer ED than those who have never smoked. Smoking also accelerates arteriosclerosis and this can reduce the flow of blood into the penis. The combination of diabetes and smoking not only encourages ED but also increases the risk of strokes and heart attacks. Why does this happen? The problem is the inhaled carbon monoxide. It combines with the haemoglobin in the red blood cells and limits the capacity of the cells to carry oxygen around the circulatory system. The lack of oxygen leads to a hardening of the artery walls and a reduction in the amount of blood that reaches the peripheral extremities of the body (including the penis and testicles). Worse, it also contributes to a general loss of libido and a reduction in the sperm count. The best answer is always prevention. Never smoking, whether actively or passively, preserves our health. Similarly, never drinking excessively and then only drinking a little red wine every day, reduces the risks of heart disease. We all probably enjoy a little drink of alcohol from time to time. It tends to make social events go more smoothly. Unfortunately, the more we drink the greater the potential damage to the blood vessels. Alcohol increases blood pressure. In the short term, sexual performance may improve because we are less inhibited (no performance anxiety) but, if this should tip into excess and alcoholism, ED usually results. If we started to smoke, stopping immediately is the ideal. If there are signs of ED, taking cialis will probably be sufficient to restore full function. But if the damage is too great, then further medications may be required. Should you have reached the tipping point into alcoholism and a loss of libido, there are programs that help you to quit the alcohol, and there is always cialis to try to restore you interest in sex.

When patience isn’t enough

September 8th, 2008

As a child, you fell down and learned all about pain. For the most part, it passed quickly. This gave you confidence to keep on learning to walk or to ride that bicycle. As an adult, if you get in an accident or have short-term pain, you know it will only take a week or so for the wounds to heal and then you can get on with your life as if nothing had happened. This makes the pain easier to bear. You simply take a painkiller like Ultram and wait to get better. Even if bones are fractured so recovery will take longer, most cope well. But all bets are off once the doctor tells you the pain is chronic, i.e. it will be with you for months or years. Even though the actual level of pain may be exactly the same as you felt when recovering from the accident, your anger or despair magnify it. Patient acceptance disappears and your mood shades toward a depression. Inactivity leads to an increase in weight, insomnia appears and stress builds. Any pain is considered bad and many abuse Ultram and other painkillers by taking excessive amounts. You have to break this cycle into depression and achieve a more positive outlook. Accepting the pain and working round it is a necessary step to getting on with your life. Any other course leaves you a victim to your own despair.

Did something slip my mind?

September 1st, 2008

Those guys down at the FDA are doing a wonderful job protecting us from all those side effects. After all, if you take a drug, you don’t want to see a second head sprouting from your neck three or four days later. A second mouth to feed is just too much with the price of gas $4 a gallon and a recession threatening. So I was real pleased to see the FDA is getting all worked up about Transient Global Amnesia (TGA). What’s that you say? Well, guess what. The next time you buy your Viagra, the labeling is going to warn you there’s a risk you won’t remember something important. So, like you’re lying there in bed next to this beautiful woman and want to go again (that Viagra’s really got you in the mood). What’s your best line? Well, you could always try, “Are you ready to go for the first touch down?” “The first?” she queries. “Well, I can’t remember anything after getting into bed!” Hey, that doesn’t read so good. She’s going to be real pissed at you if you say you can’t remember the last five times. What was she doing to please you so much? Now I understand why the FDA is so worried about this TGA. It could get real dangerous in bed if you can’t remember having sex with your partner.

Prejudice and disability.

August 26th, 2008

Disability is all in the eye of the beholder. If someone has lost a limb or has some equally visible sign of a physical problem, the reaction is usually sympathetic. But take away the more obvious visual clues, and how the general public will react becomes a lot less predictable. In our society I have all the opportunities the healthy man has. But not every man is so happy.

Everyone who has a mental disorder will understand this. People who are depressed are told to “get a grip” or “snap out of it” as if emotions can be controlled at will. Those who suffer from panic or anxiety attacks are labelled “hysterical” and “unbalanced” which are hurtful words.

There are millions of people who suffer from anxiety and panic disorders, whether on their own or as a symptom of depression. To continue their everyday lives, they rely on xanax. Let us make a clear distinction. This is not like appearing on American Idol where contestants willingly risk humiliation to search for fame and fortune This is mundane existence: get through the door and drive to work to earn enough to live on. If that paycheck does not come at the end of the month, this is financial disaster. The advantage of xanax is that sufferers simply take a pill three or four times a day and this controls the more obvious symptoms. They can then walk around, doing their jobs with no-one any the wiser.

No one really understands the true nature of mental disorders. Many people are thinking that sick people can cause a dangerous situation. Prejudice and cruelty are the result. These reactions amplify the problem for the victims. If the disabled know that people will mock or criticise them if they have an anxiety or panic attack, they are more likely to avoid situations in which there may be stress. Carry this one step further and it becomes agoraphobia where they are too frightened to leave the house at all.

This points to another aspect of the problem. People usually don’t like to talk about these disorders. There is always the feeling that patients are being judged when they talk to others about how they feel. Research suggests that about 20% of people with anxiety and panic disorders do not get help, but buy xanax through the internet without first discussing the problems with a doctor. While this is understandable, it is not necessarily wise. Therapy and counselling are the most reliable long-term “cures”. Xanax simply keeps the symptoms at bay and should only be used over short periods of time.

Another problem is hidden inside the fear of the treatment. Anxiety and panic are not necessarily “rational”. No matter what evidence they may read or hear about safety, even the slightest risk of side effects can seem daunting. Do we trust what our doctor tells us? Do we think the drug companies are completely honest about all the risks? The fact that the more obvious symptoms of anxiety and panic can be controlled in 70% of patients within the first two or three weeks of starting a course of xanax simply leaves people worrying about what happened to the other 30%. The explanation is that it takes time and patience to follow a course of treatment and this allows people to fall prey to their anxieties. Many simply stop taking the medication or take it too infrequently for it to work well. Prejudice in all of us can perpetuate anxiety and panic disorders.
